Paulig aims to strengthen its position as a market leader of Tex Mex in Europe with a 45-million EUR investment into a new production facility in Roeselare, Belgium. The new factory, which would be built next to the existing facilities, will focus on producing tortillas and increase the company’s innovation capabilities. Paulig expects to start production in the new factory in spring 2022. 

“This investment marks an important step in the execution of our international growth strategy. It is the biggest investment Paulig has made outside Finland and will strengthen our leading position in the Tex Mex category in Europe”, says Rolf Ladau, CEO of Paulig.  

“Tex Mex is currently one of the fastest growing categories within the food & beverage sector. It’s convenient, tasty and highly customizable – all of which are highly relevant for the consumers today.  You can try out new flavours with tacos and tortillas and use vegetables and plant-based proteins, among others, as their toppings. I think that is what makes Tex Mex food so popular,” continues Rolf Ladau. 

Paulig operates in 13 countries and it currently has four Tex Mex factories in Europe, two of which  are located in Roeselare, Belgium.  

“We are planning to start up the new factory in spring 2022. I believe that the investment is also important for the Roeselare area where we already employ about 700 people and will recruit many more in the coming years. We want to be a reliable partner for our customers and with the new factory we keep ensuring a continuous tortilla supply for a growing demand in the future”, says Thomas Panteli, SVP Supply Chain and Sourcing. 

Considering climate and well-being aspects  

Paulig wants to be a sustainable frontrunner in the food & beverage industry and the company has set ambitious climate targets. These targets and the overall climate impacts are considered when the new factory is being built. The location in Roeselare allows optimisation of logistics and its climate impact. Paulig is also investigating possibilities for using renewable energy in the new factory. 

“As a food and beverage company we are a big part of the climate and health solutions. The new factory will be more energy efficient. This means more volumes with the same energy consumption”, explains Thomas Panteli.  

Paulig wants to offer tasty and healthier choices for consumers and the new facilities will also bring innovation capabilities.
